Haven & Hearth Restore Energy Until Healing By Eating?
Many people think they need to cut back on calories when they're trying to heal from an injury or illness. But new research suggests that consuming enough calories and the right mix of nutrients is critical for tissue repair and regeneration.A study published in The Journal of Nutrition found that mice given a calorie-restricted diet had reduced bone fracture healing, compared to those that were able to eat as much as they wanted. The researchers believe that the restricted diet impaired the animals' ability to create new cells and repair damaged tissue.A separate study, published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that people who were recovering from a major surgery had a much higher chance of complications if they didn't consume enough calories. In fact, those who didn't meet their calorie needs were four times more likely to develop an infection and six times more likely to experience a major wound complication. So if you're trying to heal from an injury or illness, make sure you're eating enough calories. And if you're not sure how many you need, talk to a registered dietitian who can help you create a nutrition plan that's right for you.
